Uncommon. Corticolous on rohutu (Lophomyrtus obcordata). Thallus whitish with prominent brown-black prothalline line. Apothecia mostly stellate, flat to subconvex, epruinose. Hymenium colourless, epithecium brown, K+ green. Hypothecium pale brown, K+ green. Paraphysoids with slightly swollen apices. Asci clavate. Ascospores obovoid 3-4-septate, 16-20 x 5-6 microns. Fits this species well except that ascospores are not uniformly 3-septate as implied is the case in New Zealand material by Galloway (2007).

Incredibly small (0.5 mm long) orange mites (? They have eight legs anyway) noted sitting within Trentepohlia and Lepraria covering the shaded bark of rohutu (Lophomyrtus obcordata).

Very difficult to get a good image of - stretching the limits of my camera for sure. However, be thrilled if someone knew what this little tyke is.

Another mite noted more frequently than https://inaturalist.nz/observations/37931870 but on the same 'tree' host (rohutu (Lophomyrtus obcordata) scurrying through the alga Trentepohlia and lichens such as Lepraria. Body brown, glossy, about 1 mm long. Extremely quick moving and presumably light-sensitive - so very hard to photograph with my camera gear alas. Again I would be thrilled if someone knew what this mite is - I see it (or things like it commonly when working with corticolous bryophtes and lichens).

Common brownish-yellow filamentous growth noted on the thallus of Lecanora flavopallida https://inaturalist.nz/observations/39338267 - growing on the shaded bark of rohutu (Lophomyrtus obcordata). Also associated with Hysterium (?) - see https://inaturalist.nz/observations/39337974

Microscope images at 40× and 100× magnification.

Identification on the basis of comments received from Dr Phil Novis - thus "a cyanobacterium; I can't see all the features needed, such as whether it is true-branching, but I would guess Stigonema. e.g. https://www.landcareresearch.co.nz/resources/identification/algae/identification-guide/identify/guide/filamentous/microscopic/branched/equal/stigonema - but other genera are certainly possible".

Hysterium?

Very small fruiting bodies noted immersed in the thallus of Lecanora flavopallida growing on the bark of rohutu (Lophomyrtus obcordata). In addition to the lichen is a dark golden-green alga (?). Hysterium like fruting bodies were noted erupting from the lichen thallus surface, often hidden amongst the alga. The pinkish colour is caused by the microscope through which I took these images - the actual fruiting bodies are dark black.
