The Ugly Duckling Conebush: Wolseley Conebush

Wolseley Conebush Leucadendron spirale
.
This Conebush is undoubtedly the ‘ugly duckling’ in the genus. Describing it in 1809, Richard Salisbury - in Knight's book on the cultivaton of proteas - noted that ‘cuttings grow freely, but possessing little beauty it should only be admitted in extensive collections’. Indeed, few people would recognise it as a Conebush, as its leaves are small and ericoid, and the fully mature cones, are only 20 mm in diameter.
.
L. spirale has been collected only four times in the past:
.
* James Niven found it in 1801 at the Breede River;
* Leopold Mund collected it at the same locality in 1819;
* James Bowie gives as his locality the swamps at Soetmelkrivier and Langklooof (but he has a reputation for giving incorrect localities); and
* Alfred Meebold collected it in 1933, describing the locality as ‘Wolseley, health, containing only few species, but river ground and swampy ground, few hours only’.
.
As far as is known the plant is extinct, but some populations may still lurk in the Worcester Valley.
If the Breede River and Wolseley localities are correct most of its habitat has probably been ploughed up, but small pockets of plants may still exist.
.
Acknowledgements for drawing: Nicci Page
.
A R1000 Reward of was offered, and posted around Tulbagh, Wolseley and Worcester, between 1995 and 2000 for the finding of confirmed plants - it was never claimed.
.
The plant has needle-like, rough, leaves 4-9mm long. The male flowerheads are 6-8 mm long and do not have floral bracts - they probably liberate clouds of pollen if knocked while flowering. The female plants produce seed-bearing cones: these form hard balls about 20 mm round. It is closely related to the Strawberry Conebush, which has longer leaves, and bigger, red cones. It probably flowers in summer.

The Life and Times of Ms Pillar of Kleinmond

Collected 23 Oct 2012 at Palmiet near Kleinmond, started cocooning 10 Dec 2012 and I finally discovered what the imago looks like 25 Jan 2013. Food plant a type of Passerina I think. It looks exactly like the 3/4 other spp found in our area, I got it wrong all the time which led to food strikes and much back-and-forthing between home and mountain. Same as http://www.ispot.org.za/node/162875

Correction
The food plant was not a Passerina, it was Erica serrata. I have posted it as a separate observation here: http://www.ispotnature.org/node/505982 Maybe I can load an interaction now that we have that facility, although I'm struggling with interactions since the merger.

"Besides the ubiquitous Acacias, I found Callitris robusta (Australian Cypress Pine) regenerating profusely after a fire. At present I know of only one small patch of about 0,2 ha near the Hollandia Flying Club. Because of its abundant regeneration this species may eventually suppress any remaining patches of indigenous vegetation on the Cape Flats."

Many delicate, sky-blue, winged males wafting along fence-line in morning sun.

Fence covered in creepers, mainly Senecio, but plenty others - Black-eyed Susan, aliens including Ipomoeia and Flaming Glorybower.

Seldom settle on leaves, apparently never on flowers.

Weak flyers - if you hold hand beneath one and blow down he'll settle briefly on the hand before wafting away again

Don't wake me up, it's a wonderful dream!

3 individuals spent Sunday morning in and around the garden, 2 ridiculously confiding in the Albizia, the third flying about shyly, craaaking occasionally.

Interestingly, the "normal" garden birds ignored them, despite their size, brutal bills and formidable-looking talons (pic 4). I guess if your life depends on early raptor identification, you learn fast and well ...

Have amp, will play - loudly!

Having long failed to find the source of loud, shrill, continuous buzzing nocturnal calls from the dense driveway shrubbery, I finally last night saw silvery movement through an intriguing hole in a Bush-tick Berry leaf. Sure enough, behind the leaf was a small (c. 20mm, excluding long antennae) critter in translucent greenish-yellow.They fall silent as soon as the torch-beam hits them, but the second pic (my first shot) shows him peering through the hole with wings still unfurled.The interesting questions are: did he deliberately make the hole to amplify his call? And to watch for approaching ladies-predators-Bushboys?
