Tiny creature- about half a centimeter long, I think. This reminded me of a scorpion but without a tail.

Growing on the trunk of a Quercus kelloggii, these singlet mushrooms measured about four to five mm in cap diameter

Mushroom with dark brown cap, spongy yellowish-orange underside, and red stipe.

Tri-colored brown mushrooms with dark center. (Coyote Trail)

No odor or taste.

either a non-red-pigmented singeri or H. olivaceoniger sensu CA if that's a real thing...
