Per @randomtruth, the hypanthium shape is the easiest character to look at for differentiation - L. cal has cylindrical hypanthiums with defined ribs, and L. junceum has shorter, conical hypanthiums that are mostly smooth.
Here's a photo by @randomtruth of L. californicum on flickr for reference - note the long, cylindrical hypanthiums with the ribs.

There are four local hedgenettles with a pouch at the base of the corolla. This is the common one and can be distinguished because:

  • it doesn't have silky hairs all over its inflorescence.
  • its inflorescence isn't compact/crowded.
  • its corolla isn't a deep purple.

A Dove's-foot Crane's Bill (Geranium molle), photographed along the Zinfandel Trail at Picchetti Ranch Open Space Preserve in western Santa Clara County, CA. Note that there are three photographs in the set of pictures documenting this specimen:

Shot 1: Provides a relatively close-up shot of the entire plant in situ, on a small, rocky ledge along the edge of the Zinfandel Trail.
Shot 2: Provides a closeup of one of the plant's flowers.
Shot 3: Provides a closeup of one of the plant's leaves.

Note the follow key characteristics of this plant:

  1. Plant is an annual.
  2. Flower bisexual, consisting of 5 sepals, 5 petals, 10 stamens, and a single style with a single stigma. Flower has radial symmetry.
  3. Sepals are covered with spreading, glandular hairs. (You can see some of the glands in the closeup flower shot). Sepals are no more than 5mm in length.
  4. Petals are bilobal/notched and light pink in color, measuring no more than 6mm in length.
  5. Leaf is round in outline and palmately lobed to divided, with a cordate base. Both upper and lower leaf surfaces are covered with many soft, spreading hairs.

Note: This plant is also known as the Dove's-foot Geranium. It is widely naturalized in California, and it is fairly common at Picchetti Ranch Open Space Preserve.

I heard two screech owls in the neighborhood, told my landlord to listen for them. Next thing you know, he's built a nesting box and put it in a big coast live oak tree. It seems that they've taken up residency - we've only seen one at a time (likely the male now), but hear two, so hopefully they're nesting in there. It's astonishing to me how tolerant they are of us, highway noise, power tools, basketball, cameras... and he seems unfased by it all. This was an unusual day, usually he only appears as the last light is fading.

From my archives: I found a bird pellet and teased apart its contents to find a tiny mandible as well as several leg bones and part of a spine – a treasure trove of rodent and/or rabbit bones.

I didn't take measurements, but you can get a general idea of the size from the coast live oak leaves nearby.

This observation is for the owl (pellet) itself. Here's the observation for the bones within the pellet:

These observations show the decomposition of a newt over time. This will give us a sense of how fast the bodies decompose so that duplicate entries aren't added to the main project and the count is more accurate.
