The orange stocky body and porous texture made me think this was a chain tunicate. There is sand covering the organism in question. It was located inside the mussel and anemone populations that were observed on a research raft next to a seaside dock.
finally found a friend. but they were hanging out on the spot right next to the road. they flew back to the nest in the field after a few cars drove close by
resting inside a tree inside a bird sanctuary, not sure if this means captive or not
