Very cool little beetle. Looked like a buprestid at first glance but the long antennae, different shape, and squishy body were all strange. iNat spat out this id and it looks like there aren't any close relatives around here so I went with that.
Caught when it landed on a flower. It pulled its legs in and played dead at first.
This large beetle was found on the trunk of what I believe is a California bay tree. Douglas fir and coastal redwood were also growing nearby. A possible conspecific pushed this individual off of the tree.

A few of these flitting around among the taller plants. Not sure what the bit is hanging off the hind tarsi of of the individual in the second image. Remnant of the pupal exuvium? Bit of nuptial gift?
