The Lonchaeidae are a family of acalyptrate flies commonly known as lance flies. About 500 described species are placed into 9 genera. These are generally small but robustly built flies with blue-black or metallic bodies
These flies are frequently observed hovering in the shade of a persimmon tree and near a compost bin.

Unbelievable but I didn't make note of the host plant! I know exactly in my yard where this was so there are only a couple of choices... I'll figure it out in the spring.
