Descripción

I had begun to positively love being an outdoorsman. Dad said that somehow, by the grace of God or men (depending on religious inclination), I had lucked into managing the best fishery in the Northeast corner of Southwest Miami County. And none of the adults seemed to care how I was managing it. Not even the scientists.

Lately there had been one that had stopped in to see Dad, a scientist I mean. The men in the neighborhood were still trying to perfect the size of the bass in the big lake.

One man, a hunter, was really into ducks. My understanding is that Jerry spent time with his brother restoring a wetland in the far western reaches of Miami County. He had an old green jon-boat stored in his garage that had a duck blind built around it. The shape of it was sort of like a tank with high plywood side walls painted green. There were slits cut in the side walls of the plywood so the men, sitting in the boat, could peek out at the ducks without being seen. When one stood to fire, you could only see him from the shoulders up. The rest of him still hidden from the ducks behind the side walls of the boat. It was even outfitted with its own Ghillie suit. Basically, a hula skirt ringing the entire green-painted plywood side walls of the jon-boat. One time Ole’ Jerry showed me a small, funny looking horn he and his brother would blow to attract the ducks. I liked to imagine these men hunkering down in their boat, taking turns blowing the little horn. When the ducks would come, it’s hard to know what attracted the ducks to the men. Was it the funny little horn, the restored wetland, or God? Dad would have answered, “yes”.

On this particular occasion, Dad asked the scientist about Jerry. Jerry had been building these contraptions to place around the lake. The contraptions were what I now know are called nest boxes. They were made of plywood and painted green. They were taller than they were wide and they had a good sized hole cut out of the top. Jerry and his brother were sinking them on posts here and there along the far side of the bank of the big lake. The near side of the big lake was residential lawns (some with very mature trees) running down hill and right up to the water's edge. Ole’ Jerry had the enormous good fortune of owning one of these houses that sat on the hill overlooking the lake. He left binoculars on his table behind the window so he could peek out, at any moment. You know, to see how the ducks were doing. It seemed funny to me, that a man who spent so much time hiding from ducks and peeking out at them, would also spend time building boxes for the ducks to hide in and peek out at him.

I asked Ole’ Jerry about this one time. He said that long, long back most of Ohio was forest. Back then, the farmer’s field that began just after the far bank of the big lake wouldn’t have existed. It would have been forest. There would have been plenty of cavities in dead trees for his ducks to nest in and peek out at him. If Ole’ Jerry had just needed something to eat, he could have easily bought it at the meat market. It seems silly to have to restore an entire wetland, build an elaborate boat, and build a bunch of nest boxes just to have some duck meat. But like I say, Ole’ Jerry loved those ducks. I have never since met a man that loved ducks more than he did.

I was up at the big lake on November 25th, 2015 and noticed these endangered mergansers. I imagined Ole’ Jerry tooting his small funny looking horn and peeking down on them. I was there to observe the far side of the lake before Dad and Ole’ Jerry caught hold of it (3rd pic - 1973). And I was there in 2015 bearing witness to the result (1st two pics). But which phrase to choose, “observation” or “bearing witness”. Dad would have said “yes, but if you want to know which one specifically, ask a scientist or a duck hunter”.
