Found on a fallen tree
vivid yellow stain, and by stain it turned my fingers highlighter yellow and took several washings to remove; smelled pleasant, tasted quite bitter
Whitish caps with cracking surface but slomewhat sticky in moist conditions, pores white becoming pink with maturing spores, stipe white with yellow tinges, coarsely reticulate. Under oak in oak-pine grove.
One of the “chestnut boletes” but since G. castaneus occurs in Europe, I’m guessing this might be G smithii due to southeast location near Asheville, NC. Hollow pockets in stipe in photo 2.
Two small fruiting bodies, caps 3 cm, white pores, hollow stems about 2-3 cm, in grass area under pine & oak. Guessing G. smithii due to southern location but G. boreal also a possibility.
