Coming from a pine tree off a nature trail, unable to get photo. Okanagana?
The soundscape suddenly changed to intense cicada electronics. I didn't know where to look to find any (on the ground, on the grasses, under rocks?) and made a mental note to check obs on iNat. I was thinking about the many hours I spent in the middle of the night to locate a cricket in my house, unsuccessfully... And then I saw one!! It was sitting halfway up on a Black Mustard plant. It looks like @dlbowls's https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/3701955
ID on song, location, and general appearance (pale marks are apparently diagnostic). Compare with song here: http://www.insectsingers.com/100th_meridian_cicadas/songs/05.US.CA.DBV.T07.Okanagana_vanduzeei_filtered.mp3
(Noting that my bug's song was fragmented because I was leaning down closer to it and it was slightly disturbed, it was continuous and forever repeating before I tried to approach it)
There's an oregona in the background, but far as I can tell the peak frequency is 9.438 kHz and the syllable rate is 278
