Ferns

During the Florida Native Plant Society Conference, a presenter from UF gave a wonderful presentation on the main types of ferns found throughout the state and how to identify them. The invasive Boston Sword Fern (Nephrolepis cordifolia), can be properly identified by looking at the back of the frond. The pinnules should overlap one another at the base of the rachis where they're attached. Osmundastrum cinnamoneum (Cinnamon Fern) typically has fertile (with spores) fronds and infertile fronds. Pleopeltis michauxiana (Resurrection Fern) has pinnules that are not fully divided from the base of where they're attached at the rachis.

Cohort Goodbye Party

Met up with most of my graduate student cohort for a farewell party as many of them are graduating. My first time at Depot Park. This is likely my second or third time seeing a Tricolored Heron. There were also two large alligators and a Loggerhead Shrike which my friend Caitlin noticed. We heard a Black-bellied whistling Duck fly over our heads as the sun set slowly.

May Flowers

Alachua County boasts beautiful spaces of unmowed wildflowers. Specifically, the ones near 441 in Alachua are quite exquisite, boasting a rainbow of colors and heights. The most prominent and persistent wildflower notice here is Phlox which blooms for months. One of the later bloomers are the tall, white-flowered prickly poppies which dwarf most others in stature. Waves of Coreopsis, Florida's state GENUS (weird, I know), blanket most natural areas.

Morning commute

I've been nearly exclusively taking the but on campus this semester and abstaining from my usual ~hour walk a day. While I don't see as many cool things to put on iNaturalist, I do save some of my time to work on my dissertation, which I desperately need to focus time towards. For whatever reason, this particular day I walked for the first time in a long while. It's also the summer in Florida...
Regardless, Mother Nature was kind and had a lot to show off that morning. I believe this was the second only time I've seen a Green Heron, the first being at Lake Alice. They are quite comedic, with necks reminiscent of a cherry-picker, and abrupt calls. There were also two alligators and an Anhinga. Overall, a great walk.

June Showers

Increasing chances for rain have brought many new species to the retention pond near our home. The night of June 10th, I counted over 20 frogs on the front porch. The Eastern Narrow-mouthed Toad was a new species in my book, it looked quite cartoonish plopping its way along. The frogs have attracted a lot of bird activity. Many Red-Shouldered Hawks are eyeing the waters, looking for prey to carry off in their talons. In one day, the Cattle Egret returned, the Great Heron, and two immature White Ibis, to prowl amongst the frogs. A Turkey Vulture stopped for a sip of water.

Trillium and Elephant Ears to bring in New Year's

Happy New Year!

I have been missing out on iNaturalist, the posts are amazing and make me want to get outdoors. Holidays are certainly not fun for all if you feel overwhelmed, just go outside and look around. Hopefully, you're near some sort of natural area, or you see a tree, a dog, or maybe a squirrel? For me, its plants, and seeing a colleague recently post some beautiful photos of Trillium in bloom set me off. I had to find this, the "Ephemeral, Spring bloomer" with the weirdly colored leaves. Somehow I always miss the flowering time, I was able to find a small population in Loblolly Woods on my way out and it changed my mood immediately. I was asked if I was alright eventually as I excitedly crouched into bushes carefully tiptoeing over to snap some pics. Beautiful plants.

I think I'll go make more observations...
