Yesterday, I walked around neighborhoods near BC, and I ventured towards Hammond Park. The weather was beautiful, sunny with a chill. It has begun to smell like fall, which I find to be very nostalgic and calming, so I particularly enjoyed this nature walk. During my walk, I looked for different types of plants and found it very interesting how quickly I noticed variety in the plants around me. I found examples of at least 3 of the 4 main groups of plants. One byrophyta, which was a moss. I think I found at least one polypodiopsida in my time on my walk, which was the Garlic Mustard plant. I also found two angiosperms, which were the Pachysandra and Spindles. The spindles were flowering with some sort of fruit or berry, while the Pachysandra was not; but when identified, it appeared to be a flowering plant. The final two observations I found were both trees, one of which I could not tell if it was an evergreen or not, and another tree.

This nature walk I began starting at BC, walked along the reservoir, and did most of my exploring once I entered the Forrest on the other side of the Reservoir. There I looked for fungi. The weather was less pleasant today; it was raining for most of the morning, but only sprinkled during my walk. I found a couple of different species of fungi or mushrooms while I was walking, along with ivy and a squirrel. I think most of my walk I struggled to find fungi because they were so hidden in the ground underneath other plants or in trees. However, once I spotted fungi, I found that there were so many different mushrooms that appeared differently.

Throughout my observations, I walked around the Pine Tree Reserve and the Reservoir. While I was walking, I took note of the students around me and also the variety of trees and plants. The weather was on the chillier side today and although it was overcast this morning, by the afternoon it was beautiful and sunny. This made the walk even more enjoyable as it was warm due to the sun, but still cool enough to avoid insects and remain comfortable while walking. I noticed a lot of different types of flowers and vegetation. It seemed that the flowers were reaching the end of their season. I even spotted some funghi, which was a surprise. I saw a squirrel as well, but was not quick enough to snap a photo before it ran away. Another organism I noticed while on my walk was a mallard in the water of the Reservoir. While watching it, I got to see it fish for food in the water as it bobbed in and out. I do not think I realized the variety of vegetation in such a small ecosystem of the Pine Tree Reserve and along the Res. I have been having a stressful week, so it was really nice to get outside and focus on nature for a change!
