Journal Week 3

October 25, 2020, ink pond at Cornell College, 34 degrees Fahrenheit, chilly and cloudy, iphone 10.

On Sunday October 25, 2020 I sat for an hour at ink pond at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa to observe the nature and the organisms inside this habitat. The habitat appeared to be quiet and peaceful. I really enjoyed sitting outside by the pond (although was cold and did not wear warm enough clothing) and enjoyed watching the organisms move slowly about. I first just sat and took in the environment. After 10 minutes I began to walk around the ink pond entirely. I noticed that it was rather hard to see organisms inside the pond as the water was not clear and I thought to myself, the bigger fish and turtles must be cold too and hiding. The main change of the ink pond habitat was the calmness and the illusion of fewer organisms being out and about.

I noticed the goldfish were not spread out like my previous observations, instead they were all clumped together among the boarder of the pond. The goldfish were hardly moving and stayed close to the tall plants and vegetation surrounding and inside the pond. I also noticed the shells of what I presume to be Chinese mystery snails in a large pile on the side of the pond. I found this to be strange and wondered if this was common to happen when the weather gets colder. I was careful not to step on shells. My hour of observation on Sunday October 25, 2020 was my favorite day of observations throughout the block.
