Habitat: Growing on ornamental hardwood in a parking lot.
Key features: Fruticose branched thallus minty green to orange. Branches round but with distinctly foveolate (pitted.) Mazaedium present at some branch tips, fairly common. Cortex UV+ bright blue white and one specimen reacted to the long wave with a bright yellow green color.

Habitat: Growing on some type of Salix species close to the coast near Westport Lighthouse.
Key features: Loosely appressed thallus measuring about 4-5cm; upper surface gray and distinctly pubescent with tiny hairs as seen in the second photo. Lobes around 2-5mm wide. Lower surface light brown and tomentose with white papillae. Reddish brown apothecia on the underside of lobes. Photobiont blue green. All microscopic shots taken at 20x.

Weather: Raining.
Habitat: Growing on bark on some species of Acer tree in a parking lot.
Key features: Reddish brown apothecia on the underside of lobe tips and the very distinctive yellow medulla. Very exciting find for me, I remember reading the slugs apparently found the medulla distasteful, and my friend the yellow color is due to the presence of pulvinic acid!
Foliose thallus, fairly small (only a few cm broad.) Upper surface grayish light brown with the yellow medulla showing through cracks here and there. Marginal lobules present but no soredia or isidia seen. Photobiont blue green. Medulla UV+ neon orange. Microscopic shots taken at 20x.

Weather: Sunny to rainy depending on which picture you’re looking at.
Habitat: Found growing on the bark of some species in the Acer genus in the “B” parking lot of TESC.
Key features: Loosely appressed foliose thallus measuring from about 4-17cm depending on maturity; lobes about 1-3cm wide. Upper cortex light to dark brown with networks of veiny ridges covered in whitish-gray soralia. Lower surface light brown and tomentose with white pseudocyphellae. Photobiont blue green. No apothecia seen. Microscopic shots taken at 20x.

Weather: Sunny to partly cloudy.
Habitat: Found growing on bark on some type of Salix species close to the coast near Westport Lighthouse.
Key features: Loosely appressed foliose thallus measuring about 4cm long; upper cortex mostly light brown but some specimens also looked kind of gray to dark brown, both with a distinct network of ridges. Lower cortex light brown and tomentose with what looks like pseudocyphellae (little white dots.) Apothecia present and abundant, reddish brown. Soredia and isidia lacking. Photobiont blue green.

I’m a little curious about the little blackish dots along the ridges I’m seeing, does anyone know if that is from a parasite or something? At first I thought it might be pycnidia or perithecium, but I don’t think it could have that and apothecia at the same time right?

I’m a little unsure about the genus on this one actually, it looks like it used to be in Pseudocyphellaria but got moved to Lobaria, anyone know if that is correct and why it fits into that genus as opposed to Pseudocyphellaria since it seems to have the psuedocyphellae? All microscopic photos were taken at 20x.

Weather: Partly cloudy.
Habitat: Found in an Acer sp. tree in the “B” parking lot at Evergreen.
Key features: Thallus about 4-6cm broad, upper cortex dark brown almost black, “dusty” feeling when dry, shrimpy-fishy smelling when wet. Lower cortex light brown to gray, tomentose and containing cyphellae here and there; picture four (40x). Lobes rounded, top surface very thick with black isidia as seen in picture five (40x).

Weather: Overcast.
Habitat: Found on the forest floor in a mixed coniferous/deciduous habitat. Overstory consisting of P. menziesii, A. rubra, and A. circinatum.
Growing on bark, possibly P. menziesii.
Elevation~73
Key features: Thallus fairly small, about 3 cm broad, whitish gray-green; lobes 2-5mm broad with distinctive black marginal cilia. Lower cortex black with a brown margin. Distinguished from P. perlatum but the bright blue-white UV+ medulla as seen in the fourth picture, signifying the presence of alectoronic acid.

Weather: Overcast.
Habitat: Found scattered in a section of forest near the campus buildings; they tend to pop up here every year. Overstory consisted of mostly Thuja plicata, P. menziesii, and A. macrophyllum. Found in the duff and mossy soil; I seem to find them in areas with more T. plicata and oftentimes accompanied but the beautiful Gliophorus psitticinus.
Key features: Cap measuring 2-7 cm, broadly convex, becoming plane and even uplifted with maturity. Cap margins starting down curved and becoming flat and then undulating with age. Color is orange-reddish-brown. Surface has a distinct kind of rough feel to it unlike other look alike Lactarius, almost feels like a cat tongue but not quite that rough. Not viscid even when wet.
Gills are attached and even slightly decurrent; subdistant and unequal. Lighter color than the cap. Produces a very watery latex when cut, not a thick white latex.
Stipe is 3-6cm long, 5-10 mm wide, hollow in the middle and kind of chunky-chalky texture (breaks easily.) Color fairly similar to cap.
Flesh is brittle, fragile, chalky.
Spore deposit white.
Smell is very distinctive of this species, I’ve found patches but smelling a maple-brown sugar aroma in the air and looming around. Although fresh individual specimens don’t smell like this, if many are growing in one area it definitely smells. If you dry this mushroom out, the maple smell becomes very pronounced! I’ve heard of people holding a lighter to fresh mushrooms as well to get the smell of unsure in the field.
