On large boulder adjacent to creek but seemingly out of splash zone. A bit of shade, facing NW. Shoots julaceous (worm or rope-like), leaves concave, apices obtuse, lacking costal spine. Interestingly, some branches on same plant less julaceous, leaves more acute, with the occasional costa ending in a spine.

On vertical surface of boulder in creek, exposed, facing SE. Plants 1.5 cm, somewhat radiculose. Leaves 1-1.5 mm. Lower leaves smaller, reddish, concave. Upper leaves larger, some reddish at base but overall green. Sturdy costa, percurrent to subpercurrent. Leaf margins plane, no limbidium (maybe a hint?), hint of serration near apex. No tubers, no gemmae, no sex organs.

On vertical rock cliff, facing W, mostly exposed. Most leaves have conical protuberances on abaxial side, cell walls of many leaves thickened, single-celled green gemmae. The leaves do not seem to be at all dentate, but the protuberances are so numerous and remarkable that I think this must be variety scabra.

At the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden on a coast live oak - plenty of this leafy liverwort with its tiny main stems tightly adhered to the bark and distinctive erect even tinier branch “extensions” with detachable leaves for asexual reproduction. You can see these in the cruddy phone photo but I will return with a proper camera one of these days and post better photos.

Relatively large, acrocarpous moss, very light grey-green when dry - almost skeletal looking. Leaves neatly overlapping when dry, spreading and concave when wet. Leaves white (hyaline) and tapered at tip. Perichaetial leaves surrounding immersed sporophyte capsules have very long marginal cilia. Papillae on laminal cells are highly branched with those branches of irregular lengths. Papillae on hyaline cells have some small low papillae and some long spiky papillae. Growing on sloping side of boulder, fairly exposed but in some shade of other boulders and oaks.
