Lombriz de Tierra Europea (Lumbricus terrestris)

Fecha

Descripción

This worm was found underneath a rotten stump near the picnic area of the Westminster field station. It has an abnormally pink head portion while the rest of the body is a more darker pink to a cream brownish color. It was not alright by the fact that it’s hiding area had been disturbed. It proceeded to move underground as soon as it had realized that it's cover had been compromised. It most likely retreated to underneath the log during the small patch of rain that ensued hours prior to its discovery. It was slightly thinner and smaller than the typical earthworms that I am used to seeing.

This fern was found within some brush along the walking trail at Westminster Field Station. It has brown spots on the back of the leaves, uniform in distribution. There was a small cluster of about five ferns all growing in the same proximity. These ferns were at waist level which can be estimated at about three feet high. As one looks further down the main portion of the fern, the leaves look much browner as if they are withering. This withering could be the result of several issues including a recent lack of rain, overwatering in the last 24 hours, or the declining temperatures. The leaves are a bright green color, while being pointed in shape. The individual leaves come to a point with smaller leaves along the edges and small almost prickly edges around each leaf.

This bird was found outside of the McKelvey campus center it most likely hit the large window above it and fell to its death. The most likely cause of death is blunt force trauma or a hemorrhage in the brain. It is most likely it is migrating songbird. This specimen was no larger than the palm of my hand and blended in with the surrounding grass in the area. It has a yellow and white underbody while the upper body is gray, black and has yellow tones. The wings are black and white, the wings are outlined in black. The tip of the wings are black while the undercarriage of the bottom or white.

This bird was found in a parking lot in Hermitage, PA. It is a small white headed, white bodied seagull, it has gray wings with a black tip. The bird has a darker gray beak with the top again being black. The seagull was being fed a bagel and became very territorial over the area as other birds began to come around. I have not seen this type of bird in the area up until this point, therefore it can be assumed that they may be migrating.

This squirrel was found running along the Shaw residence hall parking lot and into a tree. It had a light gray to brown upper body colored for all the underbody was a lighter brown. Which may point to the squirrel being a fox squirrel. The squirrel was very good at being discreet in climbing up the tree and jumping from one branch to another branch, which is when I inevitably lost sight of the individual. The squirrel was most likely foraging for food along the campus grounds, to create a large stock in order to better survive winter.

This specimen was found eating some grass outside of the Shaw residence hall. The individual had a dark brown and lighter brown mixed coloration throughout, with lighter areas in the ears. It had a white tail which is not visible in the photograph but was very apparent as it was running away from me. This rabbit was very quick as it rapidly got away from me and hid in a bush to camouflage itself. This specimen was very smart and quick to detect any threat to it, as it detected me creeping up behind it while I was still around twenty feet away from it. The large ears most definitely played a part in noticing the sound of my feet in the grass coming closer towards the rabbit.

This stink bug was found on a car in a parking lot of Westminster College. It has six legs and two long antennas most likely used for helping the insect navigate different environments. Those antennas have a strange pattern with long darker portions that are split by small cream colored spot antennas have a strange pattern with long darker portions that are split by small cream colored dividers and then continuing with the long dark portion. The larger part of the body is covered in dark brown, light brown, cream color patterns. While it can be seen that the wings underneath have a more uniform brown and cream coloration.

This green insect was found on the back of a car in the Applebee’s parking lot in new Castle. It had very long antennas which were most likely used to help the individual navigate the terrain. Especially because it was located in a parking lot directly adjacent to a major roadway. It did not have as strong of jumping legs as the grasshopper that I found at the field station which implies that it may not be made for more rough terrain which is probably why it was found in a less rural area. The individual had a more gold into brown body while the legs and upper part of the head were a bright green.

Descripción

This moss was found at the base of a large tree at the Westminster field station. The moss has very small appendages, quite similar to cilia, this are most likely used to help the moss reach sunlight for photosynthesis. It is growing going up the tree but not necessarily connected to the tree. On the opposite side of the tree trunk, there was moss with a much lighter coloration. This most likely means that the other portion the moss was not receiving as much nutrients or sunlight and could therefore not complete photosynthesis as successfully as the moss growing upwards.

This slug was found underneath a dead tree limb that had sunken into the ground. The individual itself was brown and dark brown divided in just below the center of the slug. It had two black extremities piercing from its head, which may have been eye spots. The slug was keen on getting as far away from me as possible for having disturbed it. It retreated into the higher grass where I knew I would not be able to follow it as quickly as possible which is why there are only three pictures not necessarily at different angles.

This plant was found on another trail in front of succession plot number two at the Westminster field station. The flowers have a darker pink base with a lighter pink and white top while it is sprouting white extremities which are most likely A part of the flowers’ reproduction process. The leaves seem to perhaps be fighting off disease and several of them are covered in brown almost blue spots. The younger more healthy looking leaves are curved in shape with jagged edges coming to a distinctive point. The older more mature leaves do not make such a curve but are more narrow in shape coming to a distinct point.

This small patch of white flowers was found growing along with other larger, stronger, stemmed plants. They were found along a trail in the succession three patch of the Westminster field station. I did not encounter other small white flowers like this before hand but in this succession patch they are growing in a clumped distribution pattern along larger plants that can help sustain the flowers. They can best be described as not necessarily parasites but growing along with other plants to help them receive better nutrients such as sunlight and water which they may not have been able to achieve being stuck on the ground, most likely similar to commensalism. They seem to be using their white coloration to help attract pollinators which are in the area for the other flowers in which these smaller plants are growing with.

This plant has a large amount of petite blue rounded fruit on it. The plant has shiny green jagged leaves which are spear shape and come to a point similar to mint leaves. This plant also has leaves that are more circular and rounded which may be a product of sexual reproduction or mutation since they come from different branches from the same plant. The base of the plant is several branches coming together at one point the branches are brownish gray in color with variation in size and shape.

This is some type of evergreen tree which can be identified because of the needle like leaves. This tree is in the beginning stages of creating seeds in the form of pine cones as the small buds on the tips of a majority of the leaves indicate. This is a very large tree on the side of one of the trails along the Westminster field station. The bark is a gray-ish to brown color towards the top and the base is more of a brown with red accented color. This tree was very large in size, going twenty if not more feet high.

These brightly colored yellow flowers half long yellow petals and only one per stem. They are all connected in what seems to be a large clumped bush almost. You can tell that the flowers have been visited by pollinators as the middle portions of several of them no longer have undisturbed reproduction spots on it while others have them prominently displayed out for an insect or other animal to help pollinate a flower. The petals were about two and a half inches long, and were quite narrow which made identification harder to accomplish.

This tree was found directly outside of the Westminster field station. The fruit are a lime green in color and are prickly to contain the more sensitive seeds that they contain, I found one that had opened up having since fallen from tree which depicts the more yellowish color to brown seeds with spores opening inside of the fruit. The leaves are long and narrow with almost wavelike points coming to one solid point. The bark is more of a gray than brown, at the base of the tree where there was some exposed area underneath the park there is a more orange/salmon perhaps better described as a clay like color. These openings in the base of the bark may be an indicator of some type of disturbance in the tree, such as some type of illness.

A green vine that is running up the side of the Westminster field station house and runs about 8 to 9 feet high up the side of the building. Five smaller please connect to one stand each with small jagged edges and coming to a more drastic point. I identified a younger clump of leaves towards the upper middle section and also found a larger more mature complex towards the bottom of the vine. Many of the leaves on the vine had dark brown spots on them which could mean that they are experiencing a nutrient deficiency or that the plant may not being doing well with the change in temperature.

These plans seem to be very common around the Westminster field station, the stem of the plant has an odd color being both salmon/red mix with green. The fruits are green before reaching maturity with a pink stem while the matured fruits are more violet in color and seem to be holding not only the seeds of the plant but some kind of violet liquid as well. The vivid coloration is most likely a warning to herbivores that the fruit is toxic. This plant was about four feet high, however taller ones were observed throughout the field station.

A brown yellow and white wing patterned butterfly with a mostly black body it repositioned to another flower which gave me another angle of the wing span. The wings have a very unique pattern, between the brown colored edges and the brown and white boxes on the lower half of the wings. Even the individual's antenna had a strange pattern, a mix of white and brown chunks while the tip had almost a bulb looking brown coloration with an orange tip. But as the individual realized I was trying to photograph it did not want me to get any other angles of it. This individual may be more difficult to classify simply because of adaptations, mocking, which causes several individuals to look the same with slight variations.

This is a type of fungus that was growing on a dead tree. The tops of each, for lack of a better term, mushroom top have a green color almost like the moss that was observed growing around it. The bottom half is more of a cream color with ridges that have a strange cream/pink color throughout. This growth is in clumped distribution pattern as there are different colonies of the fungus on different parts of the remaining bark on the dead tree. This specimen was found in the woods of the Westminster Field station along side one of the trails.

Some type of grasshopper with a yellow and black head and torso. The legs were more of a reddish brown color with a lined pattern on the upper part of the legs. It had a darker colored eye spot and more brown colored antennas protruding from the head. It was found resting on a gate on the edge of the butterfly garden portion of the Westminster field station. The specimen did not move that much while I was taking pictures of it which most likely means that it thought that it was camouflaged as if I could not see it, which is most likely the reasoning behind this evolutionary coloration pattern.

Observed the toad on the Westminster campus right outside the library. It was hopping along in the grass, but did not seem to be too startled by my being around it, this is probably the result of its habitat being around a well populated college campus. The toad was about the size of my palm, but could move several feet with one jumping motion. The toad was a brownish yellow color with different coloration patterns between the main body and the legs, most likely to help the specimen camouflage in its environment. Additionally, the toad had lighter colored raised areas on the darker brown spots throughout the main portion of the body.

Found growing on a fallen stick in the trails of the Westminster Field House. I believe it is some type of decomposer which is why it was spotted on a downed limb. The mushroom like decomposer had a more uniform coloration pattern with a white surrounding edge filled with a lighter gray brown color to a more yellow brown color and the center is more sporadic, mixed with white gray and brown if not almost like a black color. Underneath the specimen there’s a strange on a sponge like pattern that has white edges and brown within each
ridge. This specific specimen was pretty small in size about the size of my thumb. Through further research the best way to characterize this specific individual would be almost like a turkey tail with the outer edges being more uniform on the middle part of the body is more sporadic such as the feathers on a turkey.
