Bracts do not form a terminal cup. Flowers pendulous, in lax, few flowered clusters at the tip of the branches. Calices not inflated. Petals yellow, furled, not abruptly spreading.
Stipules small, not leafy. Leaves sessile, crisped, not linear or with linear lobes, toothed but not pinnatisect, green, glabrous, but with felty hairs between the veins below.

Bladder cells not hair-like, petals magenta pink, leaves cylindrical in cross section, upright purplish stems.

Lvs apparently tubular (not M. alopecuroides, M. cruciatus, M. filifolius or M. simplex). Flws blue (not M. thereianthoides). Most leaves green, no sign of fibrous neck at the base of the stem (not M. tubulosus)
