26°F and windy out on the jetty. Common loon for many reasons, including face & neck pattern. Could be first winter bc extent of white feathers on upper neck extending posterior. Hefty bill also.

One of the first hunting sharp-shinned I’ve seen this winter! Relatively small bird but blindingly fast! Square end of tail - has white terminal band. This one is significantly smaller than my regular Cooper’s. I’ll try to find a photo of bird’s back with white feather bases. Very typical.

Every year I see a raven pair around here for a while, thru fall. This day there were 3 - two adults and a juvenile. Nasal bristles visible in this photo & croak was unmistakable!

On Manasquan side of inlet standing on jetty. Out of focus photos bc it was not meant to be the subject of my photo - saw it later as I looked more carefully. Photos taken at >150 foot distance. Squat appearance, yellow legs & proximal beak as well as pattern & location all led me to Purple sandpiper, but I’m no sandpiper expert so open to all opinions!
