Spreading much branched arching shrub 20-30 cm tall with long slender branches; bark flaking in strips, young branches reddish covered in dense crisped white hairs. Bracts toothlike, caducous. Flowers golden, Calyx teeth linear long. Viucher specimen: Muasya & Stirton 5565.

Decumbent lax shrublet to 30x60cm, resprouter forming tangled heaps. Branches russet brown with appressed white hairs, bark shredding into strips. Flowers small, yellow, turning ferruginous. Bracts minute 2mm. Voucher specimen Muasya & Stirton 5564 (BOL), Burnt slope South aspect. 1 st year after burn.

I am not sure about A. astroites. Also similar to pachycarpa ssp rugulifolia but fruits of both are different, as is the shape of the keel of the flowers, habit of the plant, the different bark, and the more swollen fruits. I have collected it at Kanetvlei and further west on the road up to the mid-altitude dam where it is common. @daniepalm

Hemispherical shrub spreading to semierect, diffuse, much branched, branches greyish, young shoots pinkish, internodes long, Leaves short, fascicled, spine tipped. Flowers dark yellow, turning orange, few at branch tips. Calyx lobes spine tipped, shiny, tube yellowish, teeth green. Common in sandy, open veld with Restios and Leucadendrons and Proteas. Voucher specimen: Stirton & Muasya 13479 (BOL). DNA voucher.
