This protist was found in pond water. It is microscopic and brown. The shape is remotely circular, kind of clumpy. Protists are found in a variety of locations, especially in pond water. Protists are not confined to one geographic area and are ever present in many things we see in our daily lives. This particular slide was prepared by wet mount in a laboratory setting. It appears to have diatoms present.

This cockroach is in the Kingdom Animalia. It’s shape was ovular with antennas protruding. It is roughly 1 cm in length. It’s coloration is white/yellow/tan. There are no reproductive structures visible in my photo. A defining characteristic that distinguishes this organism from Vertebrates is its lack of skeletal structure. It was found under a soggy log. It’s typical habitat is in warm, dark and wet areas. It is geographically distributed mostly in Western Europe, with few being found in the southern United States. This is a protostome.

This pine tree is a gymnosperm. It is in the kingdom Plantae. The organism was tall, circular from the root up, until a gradual branching. The organism was approximately 50 feet tall. The color was brown with green pine needles. A defining characteristic is the presence of woody, vascular tissue with seeds, but no flowering. This differentiates it from other plant groups, including angiosperms. This pine tree was found near a woody area with many other oak and pine trees. Pine trees are geographically distributed widely across most of North America and Europe. They can also be found on coastal areas in South America and Australia.

The greenshields are lichens. It is from the kingdom Fungi. The shape is circular clusters that accumulate on trees. The size varies, but in this case it was approximately three inches across. The coloration is mint green. It’s reproductive structure is not visible in the photos, but typically fragments from the thallus allow for its vegetative reproduction. A defining characteristic that distinguishes it from other lichens is its green color, hence the genus name greenshields. The lichen was found on a fallen branch in a woodland. The known geographic distribution of the organism is widely spread across the United States and Western Europe in areas that have woody plants/trees.

The kingdom of this organism is Plantae. The shape of this plant is symmetric, there are 6 petals in total. It is a monocot, this is known because its petals are in multiples of three. It was approximately one inch across for the flower and raised 5 to 6 inches from the ground by its vascular structure. The color of the flower is yellow with a green stem. Unfortunately, I did not capture reproductive structures in my photos. The characteristic that distinguishes this species is its fringed edges around its flower that other similar plants lack. The habitat for this organism is in wetland environments. It is geographically distributed on coastal plains in Florida, Alabama, and North Carolina. It is an angiosperm.

Spanish moss is in the kingdom Plantae and is, contrary to name, an angiosperm. The shape of the plant is hair-like tissue. The color of the plant is gray. The size varies depending on the amount clustered on the trees they typically inhabit. One of the characteristics that differentiates it from other angiosperms is the fact that it manifests in a moss-like fashion with clear flowering not visible. It’s habitat was on the ground next to a fallen branch in a woodland. The known geographic distribution of Spanish moss is Mexico, Bermuda, the Bahamas, Central America, South America, and the southern United States.

The kingdom of this organism is Plantae. The shape is roughly circular colonies. It is around two inches across the colony. The coloration of this bryophyte is green. The reproductive structures present are not visible in my photo. A defining characteristic of this moss is the fact that it literally looks like a pin cushion, hence its common name. This moss was found across from a stream, along the ground near many other plant species commonly found by wetlands. The known geographic distribution is the eastern United States. This is a seedless non-vascular plant.

This yellow-bellied slider is in the kingdom Animalia and the phylum Chordata. The shape of the slider is ovular due to its shell shape. It was approximately a foot in length. Its coloration was mostly yellow and black with the shell being colored brown. There were no reproductive structures visibly present. A defining characteristic that distinguishes it as a yellow-bellied slider is the green spotting on the neck and underside of the turtle. This helps to distinguish it from closely related turtle species.
The habitat of the yellow-bellied slider is typically a pond or a stream. This particular organism was found on a branch hanging over a stream.
The geographic distribution of this organism is mostly in the southeastern United States from Florida to Virginia. It is a Deuterostome.

Tuber ladder fern is in the Kingdom Plantae and is a seedless vascular plant. The shape of the ferns fronds are long and ladder-like, coming to a point at the end. It is around 1 m in total size, with its fronds measuring approximately 100 cm in length. The color of this organism is green. A reproductive structure that is visible are the sori that are located on the bottom side of the fronds. A defining characteristic of the tuber ladder fern that separates it from other plants is its seedless vascular nature. This separates it from bryophytes, gymnosperms and angiosperms. The habitat it was found in was a dry area shaded by trees. It is geographically distributed to northern Australia and Asia, but is indigenous to Hawaii. It can be found in the Southeastern United States. It is a seedless vascular plant.
