Wallkill Rail Trail has these all throughout the gravel. Not sure, but probably prickly pear. Wonder if they can be grown in a lidless jar...

It looks like the body of an antlion larvae with a sponge on its back. I was thinking either a scale or a mealy bug but the body really doesn't look like either in my opinion. Would appreciate a genus or species ID
