These strange insects curl up the leaves and cause them to develop red sores. several leaves are infected. The photos show leaves opened up by hand, and they appear to have eggs inside.

This sounds like a yellow-rumped warbler to me but I am not an expert, and I saw one or more townsend's warblers around, and this bird had a head that looked like a townsend warbler as it flew over me when I recorded the audio right next to the freeway.
I attempted to remove the awful freeway noise from the audio. At the last 5 seconds I have an unedited portion incase the bird call was altered.
