This isn't the first of these I've seen. They hide under landscaping rocks and other things. I've read some are invasive. They're ugly, for sure.

This is growing on the side of the road near home. It may be the yellow form, as is noted as commonly growing nearby. I've found an as yet unidentified form growng in a field just off Moores Lane, behind the alley of Heatherwood Drive, in recent years.

We have muscadine in abundance nearby so this may well be a grapevine scarab beetle.

This one was hanging out on the siding all night and day. Not sure if it was freshly molted or if it was dying, but released it back to the wild.

I've never known the terrestrial plant to which this leaf belongs to produce any flowers, but it is in a very shaded area. The soil is slightly acidic and mostly red clay, excepting the layer of detritus, consisting largely of decaying leaf litter, earthworm castings, sand, and the silt deposited by runoff from heavy rain fall in the immediacy.

Cloudy wet weather including intermitten sprikling rain, relative humidity app. 95 percent, wind south at 15 mph. This beetle flies, jumps and hops. Found on the ground near flowerbeds. Outside temperature app. 70 degrees F. Soil loamy, mostly iron-rich red clay. Blur is the result of containment of captured beetle in a plastic bottle at time of photograph.
