We were on a boat in Lake Kivu and I saw it from afar in a small island called Peace Island. When we approached he came down, jumped on our boat and checked in to see if we had food then went back to shore and up the trees.

Surprisingly spiky tail. Darker than the kind I usually find around the house. It found a container with rocks and soil I was using for planting, probably cooler than any other surface in the house.

The wings were very interesting looking. The front edges were dark and shinny and the back edges completely transparent.

Not sure what these are, but looked like what I'd expect mulberries to look like! Not sure they grow around here though.

This was the coolest thing.
I was hanging out by a tree when I heard this bird swoop down and try to grab a dry leaf in the middle of the street thinking it was an animal. It tried a second time and then after the third time it flew away, which I captured on video (screenshot above).
I've seen these around, usually flying very high, but I'm too new to the area to identify.
It seemed to be attacking with its feet not its beak that's why I'm guessing Accipitridae.

This was a pretty amazing bird I had never seen before; all black, about the size of a large chicken/small turkey, with a red crest.
When it opened its black feathered wings to fly, there were vibrant red feathers, matching the crest on its head.
Gorgeous. Wish the photo wasn't so awful.

Sand-colored with dark and whitish markings allover its body, about 18cm.
It always hides when I pass it in the morning, always in the same spot, but today it stood there long enough for a photo.

I could not see the bird but captured this lovely sound. I think it's one of the many small (8-12cm) birds I see around all the time.
