This small, reddish Telephanus (family Silvanidae) is the dominant Telephanus species I have encountered on dead fronds of Prestoea acuminata palms on or near my cloud forest property, Cosanga, Napo, Ecuador, ~2100 meters elevation. Other Telephanus species and at least one Euplatamus species have been encountered rarely. This Telephanus seems to arrive later than another silvanid species, a new genus I found that is apparently closer to Euplatamus. Samples of each in all life stages are being collected for DNA study and description.

May have come from subcortical (under bark) space. It appeared in my insect net that I had held below a loose flap of fairly fresh bark I had lifted to check for beetles. The genus is not known from the subcortical microhabitat so far as I know.

Another "red slash" Calopteron (fam. Lycidae) from near my cloud forest property, Cosanga, Napo Ecuador, 2100m elevation. I don't do "observations" so why am I including it when I already have an example posted? It's because the transverse band in this case is much wider and not as red as in my other photo.

I don't generally post "observations," just examples of the species I have found. However, I've added this photo despite my prior example of this species because it is a better image

Calopteron sp (fam. Lycidae). Either a species or a color morph that is part of the minor mimicry ring in my locale that sports these colors. The two other members are a Pteroplatus pulcher cerambycid and a new genus of Lampyridae. Cosanga, Napo, Ecuador, ~2100 meters elevation.

Nov. gen. Lampyridae, female. Whether this is a distinct species or just a color morph is undetermined at this point. However, the trasverse red slash near the elytral midpoint places it in a minor mimicry ring in my region with two other members known so far, a Pteroplatus cerambycid and a Calopteron Lycid beetle. Cosanga, Napo, Ecuador, ~2100 meters elevation.

I think this is just a color morph of Pteroplatus pulcher (fam. Cerambycidae) that places it in a minor mimicry ring in my region that features blue-black body except for a transverse red slash near the mid-point of the elytra. Other members are a new-genus lampyrid and a Calopteron lycid beetle. Cosanga, Napo, Ecuador

Lycid beetle I caught mid-flight in "downtown" Cosanga as I waited for an inter-provincial bus. It is unusual for the region because its color pattern approximates that of the lower elevation orange & black mimicry ring. I have collect just two others with similar colors/markings in the region. Napo province, Ecuador, ~2000 meters elevation.

OK I seem to have a disagreement between experts. This was originally identified as Mesopteron sp., a net-wing beetle (family Lycidae) from on or near my cloud forest property, Cosanga, Napo, Ecuador, ~2100 meters elevation. However I am now informed by a PhD candidate who is describing specimens of this group that it is an undescribed genus in the tribe Leptolycini.

I found a fancy Macrolygistopterus larva in the rotting top of a fencepost in Cosanga, Napo, Ecuador, ~2100 meters elevation. I decided to try to rear it. By luck, the larva was almost ready to pupate, producing a pupa the likes of which I had never seen before. Cosanga, Napo, Ecuador, ~2150m elevation.
