Williamson County, Texas; Granger Lake adjacent Willis Creek WMA

Amphiachyris dracunculoides

The field just inside the fence for the Willis Creek WMA off of FM971 was full of Amphiachyris dracunculoides, as it usually is in the fall. However, since the cows were grazing that area, I had to take observations of a plant outside the fenceline. Most plants were probably past flower or close to the end of it. The one I recorded was about 75cm tall. The size of the plant and the corymbiform arrays are indicative of A. dracunculoides rather than A. amoena. Other characteristics seemed less conclusive. The lone seed was setulose, but hard to tell if long or short. The receptacles appeared glabrous, but they are very difficult to photograph.

There were a few scattered patches of Gutierrezia texana around the park. This patch included some robust, woody specimens that were about 60-110cm tall, while others around the park were not quite so robust.

Amphiachyris amoena

Surveying for broomweeds and snakeweeds, I unexpectedly encountered what appeared to be a decent sized patch of Amphiachyris amoena mixed in with some Gutierrezia texana on the north end of the pond trail. I only examined a couple of plants but there appeared to be a fair number of similar looking plants in one of the grassy areas between junipers. The plants were about 30cm, with a more open inflorescence than the Amphiachyris dracunculoides I saw on the prairie trail.

I found one receptacle with an achene and an old disc flower with its pappus of scales still intact (oriented upside down in photo).

I also attempted to photograph the receptacle on a dried out head to investigate the for the presence of "hooked, swollen-based airs" which are supposedly present on the receptacles of A. amoena (as opposed to A. dracunculoides). Though I could see some potential stubby hair-like structures, they were so small that I could not resolve them even with a 100mm macro lens.

Amphiachyris dracunculoides

Surveying for broomweeds and snakeweeds, I only spotted a few of these, standing out in the field on the south end of the prairie loop, though it looked like the fields to the west of the park also appeared abundant likely with both Gutierrezia texana and A. dracunculoides. Plants were about 70cm tall. Definitely not my best photos due to dark clouds and wind.

Gutierrezia texana

Surveying for broomweeds and snakeweeds, this was the most prevalent of them during my brief investigation in the north end of the park. G. texana was common to abundant on parts of the prairie and pond trails, though there were ocassional sightings of Amphiachyris dracunculoides and Amphiachyris amoena. The fields to the west of the park also appeared abundant likely with both G. texana and A. dracunculoides.

Sat down to investigate whether I could find any Conobea still in flower (could not), and found this mixed in with it on the eastern exposed shore of Colorado river. iNat wants to put this in San Saba county per the coordinates, but it was on the Mills county side of the river. Flowers were perhaps not fully open.
