Check out this pretty girl! She laid 7 eggs, but only 2 have hatched. One of the nestlings didn't appear to be doing well when I monitored the box last week. 🤞 the nestling is doing better.

In an earlier observation, I mentioned Tree Swallow runts. These photos show the smallest runt that I can recall. It was begging for food and adults were in and out of the box making food deliveries.

The difference in size can be due to Asynchronous Hatching. In Tree Swallows, the last egg laid may not hatch for some days after the others, since the female starts incubation after laying the penultimate (next-to-last) egg.

It could also just be a runt that is not getting as much food. In this case, the runt was hatched from a smaller than usual egg.

This observation was part of a nest box trail done in conjunction with the California Bluebird Recovery Program (CBRP), which runs the Cavity Nesters Recovery Program (CNRP). CNRP involves many volunteers across California who establish and monitor nest box trails for cavity-nesting birds. During the breeding season, these boxes are checked weekly for parasitism, predation, number of eggs, nestlings, and number of young fledged. Then at the end of the nesting season, volunteers submit their results to CBRP. We compile these results and submit them to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s NestWatch program and other interested organizations.

Wow! Another nest with seven eggs. The normal range of clutch size is 4 to 7 eggs with 5 eggs being most common.

This is such a pretty nest.

These are 2 of 4 American Kestrel chicks still in a nest box. Two have already fledged, and these 2 should soon fledge. The chick on the top of the photo is a male, and the other a female.

I saw some people fishing in the river, and throwing these guys up on shore. They were only ~4" long, and they had at least 30 of them in a shopping bag. Hopefully, they're brook trout (and not a native species) because it was sad to see so many tiny fish being pulled from the river 😕
