I observe and identify viruses.

TAGS USED IN MY OBSERVATIONS

JUSTIFICATION FOR UNINTUITIVE IDENTIFICATIONS

  • Aucuba japonica var. ‘crotonoides’ and ‘crotonifolia’ are false varieties; the spots are caused by the common, desired, vertically-transmitted 'Aucuba bacilliform', a putative Badnavirus sp. (T.E.R:R.A.I.N.). Because the virus is desired, observations on non-wild hosts should be considered non-wild.
  • Dinocampus coccinellae paralysis virus is necessarily present in all D. coccinellae (Dheilly et al. 2015). Therefore, evidence of the latter is evidence of the former.
  • Rose mosaic is identified as 'Viruses' because it may be caused by any combination of four spp., some of which share no higher taxa (da Silva et al. 2018).

RECCOMENDATIONS FOR INATURALIST TAXONOMY

  • Italicise all virus taxa in accordance with the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) code.
  • Make the ICTV an external name provider.
  • Remove the rank of Viruses; there is no rank.
  • Species names should be allowed to include Arabic numerals, removing the need to incorrectly spell them. (This may become redundant pending ICTV nomenclatural changes).
