Research Interests & Publications: (1) biodiversity and genetic resources conservation; (2) conservation of traditional agroecosystems; (3) population dynamics and extinction vulnerability of long-lived, large-bodied, iteroparous vertebrates; and (4) mammals threatened with extinction by human exploitation of the female:offspring bond. Previously, I conducted simulation research on apparent vs. true pregnancy rates of Antarctic fin whales with the late David E. Gaskin in Canada (1989-90) which was presented to the IWC (International Whaling Commission) and NMML (U.S. National Marine Mammal Laboratory). My research on West African chimpanzee population dynamics for the Jane Goodall Institute (1990-91) was utilized by Dr. Goodall in 1992 to convince Congress to add foreign populations of the chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) to the U.S. Endangered Species list.

Note: All remaining copies of this book (originally published by the U.S. Dept. of the Interior in 1984) were shredded in 1985 under an order by former Secretary of the Interior James G. Watt. I am indebted to Dr. Peter H. Raven and the late Dr. E.O. Wilson for rescuing this government document and arranging for Sinauer Associates, Inc. to reprint the 2nd Edition of this book in 1989.
