Be a ‘Citizen Scientist’ and help Environmental Center identify the creatures and plants that call 1000 Islands home on Saturday, May 13th. The 1000 Islands BioBlitz is a race against the clock to catalogue as many species in the 1000 Islands Conservancy Zone as possible. It gets underway at 8am, rain or shine and ends at 3:00. By hosting the BioBlitz, 1000 Islands staff hope to build a list of species on the property that will help develop strategies to repair or enhance the local ecosystem.
Adults and families are invited to participate and prior knowledge of plant and animal identification is not required. Staff and volunteers can help with identification and submitting data to iNaturalist for a fun way to learn about the flora and fauna found at 1000 Islands. Participants are encouraged to download the app iNaturalist and bring their smartphones or other devices to track their observations.
NEW! As part of our Bio Blitz event we will have programs specific to different areas of nature. Join us at 10:30 for a program on freshwater mussels, 12:30 to learn about birds and International Migratory Bird Day, and 2:00 to learn about bats.
