This week 146 observers made 630 observations between Sunday, March 28, 2021 to Saturday, April 3, 2021. Among the top five observers, @ronwertz observed 60 examples of life in the Anacostia watershed; @stephen220 contributed 40; @jmgconsult contributed 37; @carrieseltzer contributed 31; and @katiehodge contributed 24. Rounding out the top 10, @wilpersm contributed 21; @katykane contributed 20; @abookb and @caz1hiker each contributed 17; and @blitzen1986 contributed 15. 64 people contributed one observation, 24 people contributed two observations, and 13 people contributed 3 observations. Plants stayed in first place (384 observations), followed by Birds (92 observations). Fungi is in third place with 49 observations, just edging out Insects (46). Very shortly there will be many, many insect (cicada!) observations. Ray-finned fishes (Actinopterygii) had the fewest observations, with just one.

Washington DC’s neighborhoods East of the Anacostia River have some of the most amazing nature in the DC region. Think Anacostia River, aquatic gardens, beautiful parks, historic estates, a grove of legacy cherry blossom trees, and our neighborhoods and backyards. These spaces not only make our communities more livable, they host an abundance of plant and animal life.

If you are interested to learn more about East of the River nature and enjoy a bit of exploration, we invite you to join us for an introduction to the City Nature Challenge. The Challenge is a worldwide citizen science event that invites residents of cities to make observations of wild plants, animals, and even fungi. Our discoveries will help scientists collect important information about wildlife—and shed light on the nature around us in the DMV.

This program will offer an introduction to the City Nature Challenge, natural areas East of the River to explore, and opportunities to get involved. The City Nature Challenge takes place between April 30th and May 9th.

Organizations participating in the City Nature Challenge East of the River in Washington DC include: Capital Nature, Friends of Oxon Run, Friends of Kingman and Heritage Islands, Friends of Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, Ward 8 Woods, Outdoor Afro DMV, Clean Water Action Chesapeake, DC Department of Parks and Recreation, DDOT Urban Forestry Division, Anacostia Watershed Society, Casey Trees and Urban Adventure Squad.

Among the top five observers, @dtread1 observed 60 examples of life in the Anacostia watershed; @stephen220 contributed 57; @ronwertz contributed 33; @jimdella contributed 22; and @kristin-marie and @wilpersm each contributed 19. Rounding out the top observers, @carrieseltzer, @caz1hiker, @jmgconsult, @jorbogmont, and @suzannebode contributed 15; @katiehodge, @lauriedkr, and @robinzs each contributed 14; and @epic2112, @hholbrook, @mstrecker, and @thefloorisflava each contributed 13. 104 people contributed one observation, 35 people contributed two observations, and 14 people contributed 3 observations. Plants stayed in first place (466 observations), followed by Birds (155 observations). Insects took third place with 91 observations. Ray-finned fishes (Actinopterygii) had the fewest observations, with just two. Mollusks made a strong showing, with 7 observations.

City Nature Challenge DC is an annual event that invites observers to record observations between Friday, April 30 and Monday May 3. Observations may be uploaded between April 30 and May 9. On May 10, the global results, organized by city, will be reported out.

The Anacostia watershed is fortunate to have many dedicated observers who regularly share their observations on iNaturalist. The information gathered helps document and celebrate the extraordinary richness of life in the DC region. There are safely distanced and virtual events planned if you would enjoy participating in a group activity during City Nature Challenge.

This week 225 observers made 1462 observations between Sunday, April 18, 2021 to Saturday, April 24, 2021. Among the top five observers, @ronwertz observed 187 examples of life in the Anacostia watershed; @izafarr contributed 91; @dtread1 contributed 68; @stephen220 contributed 56; and @jmgconsult contributed 55. Rounding out the top observers, @lbyrley contributed 44; @epic2112 contributed 43; @wilpersm contributed 35; and @carrieseltzer and @kristin-marie each contributed 29. 90 people contributed one observation, 35 people contributed two observations, and 16 people contributed 3 observations. And, you contribute to documenting the overall DC region's wildlife for City Nature Challenge 2021. The DC region contains a great number of habitats, all coming to life in response to spring warmth. The event runs from Friday April 30 to Monday May 3. Results may be uploaded through May 9th. Observations uploaded are automatically included in the City Nature Challenge DC data if they are observed inside the regional boundaries. The resources page has plenty of helpful information.

The weather for the next four days looks lovely! Nature is inviting us to enjoy the outdoors, take some photos along the way, and share those observations on iNaturalist. Friday April 30 is the kickoff of the four day City Nature Challenge event. The event isn't over after Monday, May 3! There are another six days of identifications, and on Monday May 10th the overall results are announced.
