First Indian Butterfly Monitoring Scheme Programme for Pune

Happy to share that the first Programme of Indian Butterfly Monitoring Scheme (iBMS) was organized in Pune on 19th August 2023. The event was hosted by the National Centre for Biological Sciences, Indian Foundation for Butterflies along with local partners Butterflies of Pune group and Biodiversity Dept of Abasaheb Garware College.

Schedule included a butterfly monitoring and count walk at Vetal Tekdi (ARAI Hills) followed by a detailed discussion on how to gather and collate data. The Bangalore Butterfly Club’s monitoring experience of 12 years was shared during the discussion that helped understand how useful and important data gathering could be. The sessions were facilitated by Krushnamegh Kunte.

About 40 participants took part both in the walk and the post walk discussion at Biodiversity Dept.
The weather was good, five 30 minutes/time constraint counts were taken between 9:20 to 11:50 am on Vetal tekdi that documented about 30 butterfly species. Many were visiting or watching butterflies and their behaviour for the first time and many were inspired to continue counts for long term. 7 locations were shortlisted where participants expressed interest to continue butterfly monitoring on a long-term basis. These are Vetal Tekdi, Lohegaon, Sihagad, Pune University gardens, Tamhini, Bhimashankar, Fergusson College and KV No 1 and 2 Dehu Road.
