Big Bear is for the birds.

The Audubon Society puts the number of bird species in Big Bear Lake at about 250. There are year-round feathered residents as well as temporary guests such as the bald eagle and white pelican. Some of those temporary guests have decided they like it in Big Bear and have decided to stick around a little longer than usual.

FIGHT FOR SURVIVAL | Local activists work to balance nature and man to preserve endangered birds.

Birds are the only wild animals we typically encounter on a daily basis. Sometimes it’s easy to ignore geese migrating overhead, or seagulls and pigeons eating scraps on restaurant patios. Observing them more closely reveals a parallel world of immense beauty and wonder.

How the Colorado River’s Future Depends on California’s Salton Sea.

California’s largest lake, the Salton Sea, is an accident. It was created in 1905 when a levee broke on an irrigation canal, flooding a giant desert playa. Today it has become a sticking point in negotiations between three states over the future of the Colorado River.

10,000 blackbirds arrived in Shasta County recently.

Last month local birders joined in a statewide survey of tri-colored blackbirds. These birds look much like their more common and widespread relatives, the red-winged blackbirds, and they are even found in similar marshy habitats. But the two speak different languages and have markedly different lifestyles.
