DDT contaminants in marine mammals may threaten California condor recovery.

Chemicals called endocrine disrupters may reduce the bird’s reproductive success.

The California condor’s dramatic recovery from near-extinction was aided by removal of toxic substances from the land, which accumulated in animals whose carrion they ate.

Quail team looks for citizen scientists.

California quail (pictured) are a charismatic backyard bird with a charming call and an unpredictable gait and flight, which helps them evade predators. During the nonbreeding season (winter), these birds forage, roost and travel in groups called coveys. Roth will be comparing the social interactions of California quail in Idyllwild with the social interactions of this species at other southern California localities, including Anza-Borrego and Royal Carrizo (just below Pinyon Crest).

Pen in Hand: Acorn Woodpeckers: noisy, entertaining birds of the California's oak woodlands.

Acorn Woodpeckers have been described as a "troupe of wide-eyed clowns" for their appearance and behavior. These birds are mostly glossy black, with cream-colored markings on their faces and a bright red cap. Males and females can be distinguished by the males' larger reddish patch, which extends forward until it touches the cream-colored band on their face. In females, the red marking does not touch the lighter band.
