US plans end to wolf protections, critics say it's premature.

U.S. wildlife officials plan to lift protections for gray wolves across the Lower 48 states, re-igniting the legal battle over a predator that's run into conflicts with farmers and ranchers after rebounding in some regions, an official told The Associated Press.

Brea’s planning new rules for managing wildlife in the city.

On March 5, the Brea City Council was set to approve a new ordinance that makes it against the law to feed or leave out food for any non-domesticated mammalian predators, including coyotes, raccoons, foxes, possums and non-domesticated rodents. Don’t worry, your pet hamsters, rats and mice are exempt, but if you set out food for wildlife, you would be breaking the law in Brea and could be cited.

The new ordinance is part of a Coyote Management Plan first voted on last month by the City Council and includes Wildlife Watch. Wildlife Watch is similar to Neighborhood Watch.

A tense battle of wits between coyotes and deer in Saratoga, California, was witnessed by Rudy Romero on March 6. Romero’s footage shows the coyotes tracking their prey along a suburban street, only for the deer to regroup and briefly chase them off.

When coyote parents get used to humans, their offspring become bolder, too.

When coyote parents are habituated to humans, their offspring are more habituated, too -- potentially leading to negative interactions between coyotes and humans.

Local Opinion: Rancher predator awareness.

I am a rancher just south of the California/Oregon border where I graze cattle in both states. The wolf issue came when OR7 entered California in 2011 and passed through my ranch, that's when my interest in wolves began. When we had the first probable cattle/wolf kill in Siskiyou County California in August 2015 I was president of our local Cattlemen Association and we now have a lot more wolves with frequent sightings.
