Driving past a wild animal carcass is a sad yet inevitable part of many drives throughout the United States. As human expansion continues, we are increasingly encroaching on animal habitats resulting in human-wildlife conflicts and casualties. But wildlife corridors use an innovative approach to help mitigate the effects of habitat fragmentation and protect wild animals.

Black bear hit by a car and killed on Hwy. 101 near Gaviota.

A driver traveling on Highway 101 near Gaviota struck and killed a black bear Thursday night, according to California Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred about 7:20 p.m. on the southbound side of the freeway, just north of the Gaviota Tunnel, said Sgt. Tom Pontes of the CHP’s Buellton office.

As Fall California Deer Migration Begins Caltrans Offers Driving Tips.

As the weather begins to change in the high country, the deer population is moving to their summer range or winter range depending on the time of the year. The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) would like to remind motorists to remain alert for migrating deer on the highways in the Eastern Sierra.
