Join the City Nature Challenge!

Hi everyone,

We're so excited for the Greater Tucson Area to participate for the first time in the City Nature Challenge!

City Nature Challenge 2021 important dates:
Make and share observations: April 30-May 3
Get all your observations uploaded and work on identifying: May 4-9
Results announced: May 10

This year there are over 400 cities participating in the CNC in more than 40 countries. You can see the full city list on the City Nature Challenge website: https://citynaturechallenge.org/. We anticipate that more than 1 million observations of nature in and around these cities will be made and shared by more than more than 40,000 people in the 4 days of the challenge! Here is more information about our local Tucson event, including a Facebook event page you can share: https://pimamasternaturalists.org/community-science/.

You're tagged in this post because you're one of Tucson's observers and/or identifiers, and we hope you're willing to take part in documenting and identifying the incredible biodiversity of our region at the same time as thousands of people around the world are doing this in their home places. You can head out on your own or join in one of the events that will be happening (more are being added too - and let us know if you're interested in hosting your own event!). All your observations made in the Greater Tucson Area during the 4 days of the event will be aggregated in the Arizona umbrella project, as well as the global CNC project. Get ready for some friendly competition between Tucson and Phoenix (you can find the Phoenix project here: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/city-nature-challenge-2021-greater-phoenix-area).

Thanks!

Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum “Sips with Scientists” Ken-ichi Ueda (co-founder of iNat): https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_o4JBLUWeRIm1mhBDEvvGzQ
Join the Desert Museum's Education Manager, Catherine Bartlett, as she interviews scientists from around the world- and not necessarily about their area of expertise! Be silly. Be surprised. BYOB. This week we’ll meet Ken-ichi Ueda, who co-founded and currently co-directs iNaturalist, a website for nature nerds.
Ken-ichi has been fascinated by nature for as long as he can recall. He used to horrify his mom by waltzing into the house holding snakes and salamanders to show her. Eventually, he translated that love into a degree in biology. Since then, he’s worked as a GIS technician, web developer, and wildlife technician. iNaturalist grew out of the belief that he might not be alone in his desire to combine nature and the Web. iNat has rendered that belief unnecessary. In his spare time, he enjoys watching TV shows with spaceships.

Educator Webinar: Citizen Science - The Digital Classroom Gets Outside

Join educators from the Arizona Game and Fish Department as we explore iNaturalist and other digital citizen science tools. Through iNaturalist, educators and students can document animals and plants that they see anywhere in the world, including their own neighborhood. By using existing features within the program, teachers can create class projects that can connect student observations, even if they aren't in the same room! They can even contribute to other projects hosted by both professional and amateur scientists from around the world, such as our upcoming City Nature Challenge.

The CNC is now LIVE!

Get out your cell phone or camera. It's time! Let's document all of the species in this beautiful beautiful place we call home. Will you be the first to share an observation? How many can you get today? Who will you share this event with?

Have a fantastic day out there observing and documenting nature!

First observation of the inaugural Greater Tucson Area City Nature Challenge!

This observation by @maxwellarchaeologist will go down in history as the very first observation of our inaugural City Nature Challenge here in the Tucson area! It seems very fitting this time of the year that it should be a white-winged dove. I'm hearing their call outside as I sit here and type this.

And here is the observation link: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/75808265
