BioBlitz results!

Thanks everyone for joining the spring BioBlitz event at Hellyer Park! We documented many birds - 40 species, including 5 species of swallows! Most birds were found around the lake, in the lake itself and on the trees. It is still breeding season - many birds are still nesting, carrying food for their young. Young California Ground Squirrels were seen everywhere, feeding on green vegetation.
The lake is home to Red-eared Slider turtles, which were highly active, in the lake and in Coyote Creek. Unfortunately, these turtles are not native and compete with the native and endangered Western Pond Turtle, which also lives in the same pond.
In our macroinvertebrate sample from the lake, we found leeches, water boatmen, and even a Freshwater Sculpin. It's a little fish, with beautiful round fins. Coyote Creek was mostly dry again, with large pools instead of a running creek.
Join us again this summer to see how the park and its dwellers change!
