The Wonderful World of Moths / Le monde merveilleux des papillons de nuit

National Moth Week is upon us (yes, there’s a national moth week!). From July 18th through July 26th, join us in celebrating the beauty and importance of these nocturnal creatures. iNat-er’s of all ages and abilities are encouraged to learn about, observe, and document moths in their backyards, parks, and neighborhoods. Here are a few tips on attracting moths for your observations.

Leave a porch light on and take a look before bed or check other outdoor lights nearby; you may be surprised to find a whole nocturnal world you never knew existed. You can also put out a white sheet and set up a light to shine on it attract them. (To get those tricky low-light shots, you may want to use a tripod or rest your hands on a stable surface such as a fence). You can also check out more tips for attracting/photographing moths and info about National Moth Week at www.nationalmothweek.org.

All you have to do is upload photos (in focus please!) of the moths that visit your porch light or anywhere else you find one this week. They’ll be automatically added to contribute to the CWF Observation Nation project as well as a Canada-wide moth week project and a global tally . Of course, your observations will also qualify for the prizes we have available right now for Observation Nation participants!

From the Canada Project you can see the provincial results and click through for a more detailed breakdown. Thank you for helping scientists monitor and learn more about moths in Canada!
