South/Aldercroft side - 12/07/2019

My first time patrolling and posting, so please let me know if I've missed anything. Oh, and please remind me where you get the rainfall amount from, so I can be consistent.

Today I walked the South side, from the stop sign to Aldercroft, 8:40am-10:50am. It rained here last night, was windy, today there are low clouds and it's close to rain but no rain, my car said 64F outside.

77 dead newts, 1 dead frog. There were 3 that I thought were salamanders, but @truthseqr says that they're actually newts whose outer skin has gone.

No live newts or other critters seen. 18 vehicles, 2 joggers and a bicyclist passed by. I swear the maples are significantly more vivid yellow this year.

Weather from http://www.weathercat.net/wxraindetail.php: 0.45 inches rainfall the previous day, 0.32 inches total today.

Newt survey - North side, Wednesday 12/18

December 18, 2019 (Wednesday) 1:30 am – 3:20 pm: 151 dead newts
Rain, wind, during the survey. The rain started the night before. I documented 0 live and 151 dead newts, most of them were not fresh. I didn't see any juveniles, but it was very wet and windy, so I might have missed something.
Didn't see other roadkills (other than the same barn owl)
Coverage: north part - Jones trailhead to the stop sign (37.187875, -121.986516).
Rainfall: (MTD: 8.19 in; YTD: 11.04 in) Very wet, windy, pretty cold. from http://www.weathercat.net/wxraindetail.php
Traffic: 3 gravel truck, 33 cars (including about 5 maintenance pickups - county parks, midpen, SJJJ), 1 bike, 6 pedestrians with dogs.
I will update the numbers later.

North/Jones side - 12/28/2019

Coverage: North half of Alma Bridge Road, from the parking lot to the second stop sign @ one way road section.
Time: 10:21am - 11:50am
Rainfall: 0 inches, dry for the past few days; clear cool day
Vehicles: 33
Bikes: 5
Pedestrians: 8, one asked what I was doing
Live Newts: 0
Dead Newts: 125
Other critters: None

Most of the dead newts were pretty dry. According to the calendar, this section hadn't been surveyed since the previous Sunday (we're all busy with the holidays.)

iNat is currently refusing to batch process my photos, so it might take a while before they're properly posted. Also, just as I said that the geotagging has worked ok, today there were a lot of misplacements, very frustrating and time-consuming to relocate. I would like to be able to see a map of observations that includes the times, not just dates, so it's easier to see where things fit in the timeline and move them accordingly. As it is, there's an awful lot of clicking involved in multiple windows for each one.

12/22/19 Survey

My son and I should be heading out within two hours to do the north side... i'm fearing the rain from the last two hours will increase the fresh sightings recorded.

Newt survey - North side, Wednesday 12/04

December 4, 2019 (Wednesday) 9:30 am – 11:30 pm
About a week since the rain started.
During the survey it was drizzling part of the time. I documented 101 dead newts, some were fresh, some have been there for a few days, but since I only saw one the previous time, I documented them all.
Other roadkills: one toad, one other amphibian, one millipede. I saw only one live newt, but it wasn't crossing the road, it was under a log (I haven't added it to the live newt project).
Coverage: north part - Jones trailhead to the stop sign (37.187875, -121.986516) plus spot-checked the Jones Trail trailhead.
Rainfall: (MTD: 5.26 in; YTD: 8.11 in) The weather was cold and wet, drizzle.
Traffic: Light traffic. Five gravel trucks, two maintenance trucks, 16 cars. The county parks truck was clearing the road, probably removing some more dead newts.

Juveniles vs Adults

Here's a publication that describes why it's important to collect data on juvenile (newly metamorphosed) amphibian roadkill:

"Neglected juveniles; a call for integrating all amphibian life stages in assessments of mitigation success (and how to do it)"

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0006320718316306

"While mortality at any life stage is concerning, juveniles should be of special interest when assessing road mortality and mitigation (e.g., tunnels to facilitate safe seasonal migrations) because their fate can have a disproportionate impact on population dynamics."
