The newts are here - Wednesday 11/18!

@tyap and I were there this morning, and we documented about 30 dead newts (many juveniles!) on the north section of the road. I'll upload all the observations later today, but I wanted to reach out to everyone and check if anyone is willing to go there and do the south section of the road today or tomorrow?

I'll share another post later with the data.

November 18th, 2020 (Wednesday) 9:10-12:30 pm: 34 dead newts found
Weather was cool, it was raining at first, later on the rain stopped. Rainfall: (MTD: 0.81 in; YTD: 0.91 in). Data from - http://www.weathercat.net/wxraindetail.php
@tyap and me documented 34 dead newts, 12 of them juveniles. All dead newt other than one looked very fresh. At least one of them got killed while we were there. It was found dead on the road in front of Midpen site 2(?) after they already checked the area.
Other roadkills: 3 Arboreal Salamanders, 1 tree frog, one slender salamander, a moth, a beetle, 8 Jerusalem Crickets, 2 different centipedes.
Coverage: north part - the county park parking lot till the second stop sign.
Traffic: 3 trucks, 71 cars, 2 bikes, 16 pedestrians, and 14 cars parked by the road and in the parking lots. Also 3 Cal Fire helicopters practicing stuff around the lake.
We met the Midpen population study a few times. They were checking their traps, that had lots of cool spiders and many live newts. They removed some dead newts from the road, and they took photos before removing them. They also put the traffic study, right next to Priest Rock Trailhead.
The rowing club was open. All county park parking lots were open.

November 19, 2020 - south side

45 dead newts (of which 5 were juveniles), 0 live newts.
November 19th, 2020 (Wednesday) 1:45pm-4:15pm
Weather: Beautiful sunny day in the mid-high 60s. It had showered gently the previous day and rained all the day before that and the road & ground were still damp.
Other roadkill: 1 large Western Toad, 1 large millipede, 1 caterpillar (and many fallen leaves and fruits doing newt impressions).
Coverage: Aldercroft Heights Road intersection to stop sign.
Rainfall: MTD 0.82in, YTD 0.92in (per http://www.weathercat.net/wxraindetail.php?year=2020)
Traffic: 46 cars, 5 parked cars, 4 trucks, 6 bicycles, 3 motorcycles, 1 walker. Several fire helicopters practicing over the reservoir.

The single Midpen study area had no newts or other critters in its pitfall buckets or section of road. They've put a traffic study spot on this side as well (not near the newt study site).

Pretty fall color sometimes, in the form of golden bigleaf maples and the bare red stems of deervetch.
