Geographic Range

This species is known only from three geographical localities in the region of Amazonas, northern Peru: on the road from Balsa to Leymebamba, near the crest of the northern part of the Cordillera Central, and at Área de Conservación Privada Huiquilla. Given the distances between known localities (ca 70 km) and the nature of threats operating in the area these are herein considered to be individual threat-defined locations. Its range, taken as proxy for extent of occurrence (EOO), is estimated at 2,954 km2. Its elevational range varies from 2,800 to 3,470 m asl.

Population

There is no information on its population status. It is known from just three adult males and one adult female. Two individuals were found over the course of seven person/day surveys in 2008 (von May et al. 2008).

Habitat

It is found in montane forest. Individuals can be collected under stones by day. Those recorded from 3,470 m asl were in areas of wet páramo vegetation, whereas an individual collected from 3,300 m asl was in elfin forest. Both habitats are within very humid montane forest. This species is presumed to breed by direct development.

Threats

There is general regional destruction of habitat through an increase in agriculture, livestock grazing and selective wood extraction. Enciso et al. (2008) reported Aeromonas caviae and other bacteria from skin samples, where this was one of the sampled species. These authors suggest that there is a potential for infection and development of the disease if biological populations undergo stress.

Conservation Actions

It is reported to occur in the Área de Conservación Privada Huiquilla (Enciso et al. 2008). Additional habitat protection is needed in view of ongoing deforestation occurring in the region. More research is needed into its distribution, population status, ecology and threats, and in particular whether Aeromonas caviae may pose a risk to this species.

Red List Rationale

Listed as Endangered given that its extent of occurrence is estimated to be 2,954 km2, it is considered to occur in three threat-defined locations, and there is a continuing decline in the area and quality of its habitat in northern Peru.
