YES BioBlitz 2022 Wrap Up

The Yellow Point Ecological Society BioBlitz for 2022 is officially over and thank you to all our participants and identifiers for making it so much fun and so successful. We nearly matched last year's observations and benefitted from participating at the same time as the Nanaimo City Challenge.
Our results compared to last year (given in brackets) are as follows:

Observations 2004 (2289)
Species 556 (508)
Identifiers 178 (252)
Observers 47 (62)

The most observed species were
Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias)
Common Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga Menziesii)
Pacific Banana Slug (Ariolimax columbianus)
Pacific Trillium (Trillium ovatum)
Cascade Oregon-Grape (Berberis nervosa)
Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus)

The top introduced and invasive species were:
Red Deadnettle (Lamium purpureum)
Scotch Broom (Cytisus scoparius)
European Holly (Ilex aquifolium)
Spurge-laurel (Daphne laureola)
Pacific Oyster (Magallana gigas)
Common Ivy (Hedera helix)

The most observed species aligns with my experience of this season – the trilliums are out in force, the red deadnettle is popping up everywhere and where the parks border residential areas, the common invasives are thriving and moving into the parks.

Some of the special sightings were the river otter who came close to @sockmonkey, when her partner called it, her first-time sighting of a Gray’s anemone by @champagnejain, and the amazing marine species from @rharbo.

Thank you to our prize winners - @pacificwhitesideddolphin, @gleduc, @lynmoss and @ammlmt, who registered for the event, had the top observations, identifications, species, and research grade quality.
Thank you also to the YES team, @arbutusleaf, @stevenhayward, @dalysbarney, @karen2102, @ruthngar, @henryjasper, @sarahfrisch, @bstaffan and many others who contributed so much to make this successful.

See you same time, same place next year!

What a great BioBlitz. It was great working together and to see such a huge amount of people contribute to both projects was amazing!
