(1807). To reject Juglans alba L. (Juglandaceae). Proposed by D.B. Ward & J.H. Wiersema in Taxon 57: 308–310 (2008). Votes: 18–0 (recommended).
This name is clearly referable to the North American genus Carya and is earlier than all other names in the genus. But the pre-1753 references quoted by Linnaeus are identifiable as two different species, three of them as C. tomentosa (Lam.) Nutt. and one as C. ovata (Mill.) K. Koch. Some have considered C. alba to be a third species now known as C. glabra (Mill.) Sweet. In 1945 Rehder therefore proposed that C. alba be rejected because it was used in different senses. However, from 1985 to 2003 the name has been taken up again in the sense of C. tomentosa in several floristic works from Texas. A lectotype was not chosen until publication of the proposal, and it is said that the Catesby illustration of 1730 chosen is ‘irretrievably ambiguous’ and possibly referable to any of three species Rejection of the name seems appropriate
