Little River Basin (Milam County) Master Gardener Demonstration Garden workday. This redbud tree got a lot of attention because of its blooms on the trunk, limbs, and twigs.
Googled this phenomena and learned the term for this unusual-looking trait is cauliflory. Redbuds, as well as several tropical trees, can produce flowers on trunks and main branches.

First sighting around 10:15-20am or so. Was alerted to this very large immature hawk by a mob of grackles that were after it. Bird soared and circled over the lots and continued north with grackles following it. Birder friend, Alex Lamoreaux showed up soon after and after relaying the sighting and jumping in the van to chase, we found the bird soaring over the Louie's Backyard area with the grackle mob in tow. Hawk then returned south and took refuge in the Sheepshead north lot. A bit later bird lifted off and circled the area for a bit and headed north out of sight. First suspicion was immature Common Black Hawk, but following better views, photos, and discussion by other birders present, we reached the conclusion that the ID is Great Black Hawk because of huge size, finely barred tail lacking thick black terminal bands, long legs that it dangled while soaring. White crescents were obvious nearing wing apex and white upper tail coverts were seen and photographed, differentiating it from Common Black Hawk. Coastal habitat and range fits better with Great Black Hawk than Common. ID Confirmed by expert, Bill Clark. Possible 1st US record following review. An incredible and totally unexpected bird!

Goatweed Leafwing (Anaea andria) - male

20 July 2014: Walked the North Lakes Inner Trail at North Lakes Park in Denton, Texas and came upon two male Goatweed Leafwings (Anaea andria) that were taking up minerals and generally hanging out in close proximity to one another and on the ground while they soaked up the minerals. The bright orange color of this butterfly is absolutely commanding of attention while its muted ventral wing color and design is a sedate camouflage-ready light brown made to look like a dried leaf that's just part of the tree or whatever the perch happens to be. But on this day they were prominently displaying their dorsal colors (primarily to one another we would assume), and cared little it seemed that we were right there next to them taking their digital image, Goatweed Leafwing.

This is a North American butterfly whose range is in part the southwestern states of the United States through Arizona, New Mexico and Texas and up the central states and thence toward the southeastern states as well. Its range does not quite reach the Great Lakes to the north nor Canada's southern reaches either and to the east it extends through the Florida Panhandle but does not reach the Atlantic Coast except briefly in its Florida and Georgia range perhaps. Its most southern range extends into northern and northeastern Mexico and includes the states of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Tamaulipas and Nuevo León, perhaps the northeast of Durango as well. Because of its North American range in Mexico and United States Goatweed Leafwing is an original authentic resident of the Western Hemisphere.

North Lakes Park is administered by the City of Denton, Texas.

Another one of those "National Geographic" observations which we were lucky to have. We came around a corner of some rocks and found a lioness with three cubs late in the afternoon resting on a large flat rock. We spent an hour there until it was too dark to take any images. She was a very patient mother with these little ones crawling all over her, biting her tail and her ears, etc. It was very special to see!

We had a great day for this species and probably saw a dozen or more. They are powerful and large predators. Image 1 shows a male hovering briefly near a female. The male was following the female around and when she would perch he would hover nearby and attempt to mate, but she would take off. Finally she landed near me and I focused on her and the male hovered briefly and I got one shot before they took off again.
