This family of bears live in an area where they are subject to hunting and torture by being chased by hounds and hounds"men" so no true specifics about the location will be provided.

These are Nevada Great Basin Black Bears, which in all my about 35 years of travels working with, looking for, tracking, and observing bears across the country are the most challenging to see. Their tracks in the area encouraged me to pay this area a visit once again as it is a favorite place in the Great Basin.

Mom and her two Cubs of the year came up for a drink below several springs that feed a small creek that unfortunately parallels an extreme 4x4 road with limited travel. I camp a mile and a half away and hike up to this location in order to limit human scent intrusion at a very important place for mountain bears of the high desert.

Had already checked this vital spring and surrounding area for bear sign and was fortunate to hike back up here one early evening to see Mom and her two cubs of the year come up to get a much needed drink. There was another bear in the area, upwind... the direction Mom stood up and looked towards, that I heard and smelled before Mom and her youngsters showed up.

Bears of the Great Basin live in one of the most challenging environments to survive in... considering food sources, water availability, cover, the ever increasing off road recreationists, and bear hunters and houndsmen.

Observing Great Basin Black Bears is always a challenge and seeing Mom and her youngsters was an awesome experience.

As always, the location is obscured to protect this bear family and other bears of the area from being killed by hunters.

She walked all the way across the shallow arm of the lake. I was in my car and didn't move until she moved into the desert. I was recording some birds and all you can hear is the deer sloshing through the lake
