I thought at the time that this looked like Juglans microcarpa, but these bushy trees were growing along the base of a sandstone rimrock on the overlook area at Lake McClellan. So I think they might just be stunted Juglans nigra which apparently is at the edge of its range in Texas in the eastern Panhandle.

The rounded lobes are common on young Q. pagoda, and the pubescent abaxial surfaces, twigs, and petioles are characteristic. Upper surface of more mature leaves are rather dark. Some of the leaves are infected with what is likely Erysiphe abbreviata, which is common on Q. pagoda in this area.

Not my collection - placing here because this species has an interesting distribution and I don't see it represented on iNat at this site by any more recent observations.

I stopped at this park on my way home to look for Mohr Oak, but I couldn't find any. What I did find was more Havard Oak. These trees were 25-30 feet tall! VERY different than the 3 foot tall shrubs at Monahans Sandhills SP. And I didn't not see the same galls in either place, which is also interesting!
