Anisomorpha buprestoides is herbivorus, feeding on the leaves of trees and shrubs. Gunning (1987) reported females feeding on crepe myrtle, roses, oak, rosemary and lyonia. Serious defoliation has not been observed but they have been found in large aggregations under loose bark. In Florida, adults are most abundant in the fall where oviposition occurs.

This species has the ability to discharge defensive secretions from glands located on the thorax. One report states that an person that was observing them was squirted on the left eye which caused excruciating pain (compared to molten lead).
