This tiny grape fern, Sceptridium dissectum has an unusual growing season, with the new frond emerging in July or August and dying back in late May or early June the next spring. The frond turns from green to a bronze color in the fall and stays bronze through the winter.
Also unusual is the fact that it grows in one of two forms, a skeletonized dissected leaf form, Sceptridium dissectum var. dissectum shown here, or a broad leaf form, Sceptridium dissectum obliquum.
Common, but still so attractive, especially this late.
