Growing under a coniferous tree
On sandy soil at drip line of mature native Az cypress (Cupressus arizonica) with evergreen oak, pinyon pine and manzanita within 15 feet. This is in the national forest on undisturbed ground at about 4500’ elevation near a drainage where Az cypress is the dominant tree. Mature cypress like this one have trunks that are 4-5’ in diameter.
